Right to Dream welcomes Ben Garner as the new head coach of the International Academy (IA).
Ben brings a wealth of experience, having coached and managed at both academy and professional levels across the Premier League and English Football League.
His resume includes stints with Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion, and Charlton Athletic, as well as serving as a long-term mentor in the Premier League's coach development program.
Building on a Legacy of Success
Stepping into the role previously held by Djimi Traoré, Ben inherits a legacy of mentorship and commitment to holistic player development.
For nearly three years, Djimi played an instrumental role in shaping the careers of many student-athletes who went on to play for FC Nordsjælland and other professional clubs.
Ben is eager to build upon this foundation.
“I hope to build on the good work that has been done, to push and to evolve the International Academy, and for us to strive to be first in class in terms of what we provide,” Ben shares.
The 44-year-old coach recognizes the IA's crucial role in bridging the gap between Right to Dream academies and the professional stage. Graduates like Mohammed Kudus, Ernest Nuamah, and Simon Adingra have all honed their skills at the IA before making their mark in the football world.
"The track record of the IA graduates who have gone on to play for FCN and across other clubs across the world highlights its importance in the success of Right to Dream,” says Ben.
A Shared Vision for the Future
Ben’s appointment isn’t just about his impressive experience, it’s about a shared vision. His philosophy resonates deeply with Right to Dream's core values. He champions a holistic approach to player development, emphasizing that fostering the right environment, partnering with young talent, and providing high-quality coaching are the keys to producing “not only good footballers but also good people.”
His vision around winning being a byproduct of a well-rounded approach, not the sole focus also aligns perfectly with that of Right to Dream, as articulated by Mads Davidsen, Group Head of Football, in his recent article on the importance of developing a ‘win deep’ philosophy.
"I was looking for a role that was part of something bigger than purely winning games," Ben explains. "Winning games and being successful should be a result of the processes in place."
This commitment to developing well-rounded individuals, along with his proven track record of empowering young players, makes Ben the ideal leader for the IA. "I have always believed in young players and have always provided pathways and given debuts to those young players," he shares.
"If they have the talent and the right attitude, then all they need is the opportunity and good coaching. This process is clear to see at Right to Dream.”
A Global Pathway to Pro Football
Ben will lead a diverse team representing Right to Dream's global network of clubs and academies. They’ve already planned a dynamic schedule for the year, featuring international fixtures and tournaments in Europe, Africa, and Asia.
These experiences will expose players to different cultures, educational experiences, playing styles, and physical and psychological challenges, preparing them for the demands of pro football and allowing "the talented players from across the Right to Dream academies to develop and grow holistically.”
Flemming Pedersen, Right to Dream Group Technical Director, sees Ben’s arrival as a perfect fit: "Ben is not only a great football coach, but also a fantastic teacher. He is working with high demands but also a big involvement for both players and staff and everyone is developing a lot right now."
“He is a very experienced football coach with experience in developing players from the academy into the Premier League. Just what our IA players need,” he adds.
