HEAD OF HUMANITIES
RIGHT TO DREAM, GHANA
The Head of Humanities will lead the Humanities Department at the RtD Ghana Academy, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning across subjects such as History, Geography, and Global Perspectives.
Reporting to the Head of Education, they will foster innovative, inquiry-based approaches that promote critical thinking and cultural awareness.
The role includes teaching Humanities subjects, setting personalised learning goals, and maintaining accurate student progress records.
Responsibilities also include overseeing curriculum design and implementation, developing internal assessments, analysing results to inform improvement, leading department meetings, mentoring teachers through regular feedback, and promoting interdisciplinary projects to enhance student engagement and achievement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Education
• Teach Humanities subjects in accordance with the academy’s curriculum and schemes of work, with a teaching load not exceeding 25 periods per week.
• Collaborate with colleague teachers and other HoDs to deliver curriculum units effectively and inclusively.
• Set and review personalised attainment targets for students, including termly reviews and reporting on effort and progress.
• Develop and maintain high-quality instructional materials and teaching resources that promote critical thinking and engagement.
• Model best practices in pedagogy, classroom management, and student engagement.
• Lead internal Professional Development (PD) sessions focused on enhancing Humanities teaching strategies.
• Produce detailed lesson plans and forward planners aligned with curriculum and school-wide academic goals.
Leadership & Strategy
• Provide strategic direction for Humanities education within the academy, ensuring alignment of academic goals
• Lead and co-ordinate Humanities department meetings, setting clear objectives and priorities for each term.
• Monitor and evaluate the impact of Humanities education initiatives, using both qualitative and quantitative data to inform improvements.
• Collaborate with other Heads of Department to promote interdisciplinary learning and holistic education.
• Report departmental progress and key outcomes to the Head of Education.
• Drive innovation in curriculum design to foster critical thinking, cultural awareness, and global perspectives.
• Ensure compliance with internal academic standards and external accreditation requirements.
Assessment and Reporting
• Maintain accurate student records to track individual and group progress, including assessments, feedback, and attendance.
• Provide timely, constructive marking and feedback, setting actionable learning targets for improvement.
• Lead the design, coordination, and administration of internal assessments and end-of-term exams for Humanities subjects.
• Prepare comprehensive termly reports that evaluate student progress and highlight key learning milestones.
Curriculum Development and Professional Development
• Lead the review and refinement of schemes of work, ensuring content is relevant, inclusive, and aligned with curriculum standards.
• Collaborate with subject teachers to establish termly priorities and deliver targeted professional development sessions.
• Facilitate weekly department meetings, incorporating collaborative planning and practical strategies to enhance instructional delivery.
• Provide regular feedback on teacher development and classroom observation sessions to the Head of School, supporting a culture of reflective practice and continuous improvement.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education
• Bachelor’s Degree in History, English, French Geography, Social Sciences or a related field of study. A Master’s Degree and relevant Professional Certifications will be an added advantage.
Experience
• A minimum of 7 years teaching experience in a Humanities subject area in an IGSCE setting.
• Previous leadership experience is also an added advantage.
Knowledge and Skills
• Strong understanding of Humanities curricula and pedagogy.
• Ability to foster critical thinking and cultural awareness.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
• Ability to facilitate staff development sessions and provide feedback on teacher development.
• Knowledge in educational technologies.
