Gareth Henderby - Technical Director

Gareth Henderby is the Technical Director for the Right to Dream Academy.  Gareth first came to Ghana nearly eleven years ago as a volunteer to help establish the Academy and remained involved to varying levels and in different roles ever since.

Whilst Gareth has been involved with the Academy since its inception, after becoming Director of Football, Gareth has drawn on his experience as a UEFA A License coach, his BA in Leisure Management and various youth coaching qualifications and other commercial leisure work experience to lead the development of the technical football programme.

Gareth was responsible for coaching our U15 Academy team that eventually finished 5th and 3rd in the World U15 Premier Cup held in Manchester in August 2008 and 2009 respectively.  Gareth has also coached our graduate Ghana second division team in the past to positions within the main league which granted the team qualification to play middle league where they finished each year in the top two.   Gareth has also considerable experience coaching senior football in Ghana, most recently as the head coach of RedBull Ghana.

Gareth's skills, expertise and experience lie:
  • Ethical sports development on the African Continent
  • Using sport and education as a tool for development
  • Understanding the long-term athlete development needs of young African student-athletes.  In particular his knowledge of African culture, customs and the challenges that face many young children allow him to help bring out their best performance on the pitch.
  • The coaching and training of young African student-athletes
  • The importance of science in football
