Independence Day
March 2011
OLD AKRADI
On Sunday 6th March, Ghana celebrated 54 years of Independence. Right to Dream students celebrated the day at the Right to Dream Academy in partnership with Vodafone Ghana by watching the Independence March in Accra, listening to President Mill’s speech and taking part in discussions about the importance of the day.
This year, the President dedicated his speech to the youth of Ghana stating ‘The future of Ghana belongs to you the youth and on a day like this, it is only right and proper that you are allowed to be in the forefront of our Independent Day Celebration’. He emphasised the importance of hard work and discipline in order to stay focused on achieving goals, in taking advantage of opportunities and in becoming the future leaders of Ghana. During the afternoon, RtD students divided into groups to discuss the meaning and significance of the day.
Frances, Academy Captain, said “It was encouraging to hear the President speak about the youth of Ghana and for him to highlight our role in the development of our country. All of the students were inspired by his speech to work harder and to be more disciplined”.
James Meller, Chief Operating Officer, commented, “Independence Day has been a chance for the students to reflect on Ghana’s history but also focus on what the future holds and the part they can play. Independence has given them the right to determine their own destiny and that of their Country’s”.

NOTE TO EDITORS
Last year the Right to Dream Academy signed a three-year partnership agreement with Vodafone Ghana, enabling RtD to continue to deliver world class coaching and a specialised programme of personal development, education and leadership skills to some of the brightest but underprivileged young football prospects in Ghana.
To date, five RtD graduates have signed professional contracts for professional clubs and a further 23 continue their studies whilst furthering their football ambitions on full scholarships at leading universities, private boarding schools and colleges in the US and the UK. Other RtD graduates follow our vocational programme and train within the football industry to become experts in this industry.
