Ghana Heads for London 2012
May 2011
With just 440 days to go until the London 2012 Olympic Games and just over 470 days until the Paralympic Games, athletes around the world are intensifying their preparations and striving to meet the qualifying standards. In Old Akradi, 4 Ghanaian Paralympians are about to embark on an intensive schedule of training and competition with the support of Right to Dream.
Throughout the continent disabled people battle misconceptions and struggle for equality. Disabled athletes across Africa face a constant challenge to secure funding, equipment, training facilities and coaching hindering their efforts to compete at an international level, despite their talent.
Right to Dream’s Paralympic Programme will support this elite squad in the lead up to London 2012, providing them with the best possible chance of success at the Games. During the next 14 months, the athletes will be based with Right to Dream from which all their training and nutritional needs will be provided. In addition, their families will be financially supported for the duration for the Programme and employment opportunities for the athletes will be sought for after London 2012.
Commenting on the Paralympic Programme, RtD founder Tom Vernon said “If we get this right and help create some world class athletes, they can become role models for a new generation of disabled athletes. They can also have a significant impact in changing perceptions towards the disabled in Ghana”.
